Klingelloon is an interactive expanse of floating helium balloons which allows people to compose music. The balloon is a common playful object which recalls childhood fantasies.
The idea is to invite people to immerse themselves into this field of familiar objects and let them rediscover the ancient creative instinct of producing sounds.
The helium balloons are arranged in four lines of four balloons in an orthogonal field. At the foot of each balloon is a faint light. The lights flash in a linear sequence. Each balloon plays a particular note.
The lines, cannot reproduce the whole musical scale. This is for reason of space and money, but the initial idea was to create a sort of 8x7 sequencer with which you could play music according to the balloons you make free.
The lines, repeated four times, create an orthogonal matrix of sixteen square meters, so it will be possible to play a note four times in the space.

About this project

Klingelloon has been designed by Maria Chiara Toncich and I for the Media Mediterranea Art Festival of Pula (CH). We were asked to realize an installation as member of the Random Clapping collective.

Development

Klingelloon has been developed using:
Processing, Arduino, and an electronic circuit board.
